Bendigo’s New Tech School On Track
Students from 14 secondary schools in Bendigo will soon have access to the latest technology and learning programs with the Bendigo Tech School on track to open later this year.
Minister for Education James Merlino, Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan and Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards today visited the school to see firsthand the progress of the building construction, part of a $128 million investment by the Andrews Labor Government to deliver tech schools across the state.
The new Tech School is located at the Bendigo Campus of La Trobe University and is part of the university’s new Engineering and Technology building.
Students attending the Tech School will get hands-on experience using specialised high-tech equipment including 3D printers and scanners, and access to a virtual reality facility and discovering area to develop projects as part of their school curriculum.
Bendigo Tech School is one of 10 opening across the state, allowing students to work with local industry on real-life challenges in a tertiary education environment.
Pilot programs will begin next term, including introductions to advanced manufacturing, computer programming, internet and information systems, and design thinking.
Vincent Chrisp Architects have designed the new Tech School, which is being built by Hutchinson Builders.
The high-tech hands-on programs will be offered free to around 8,500 students from the 14 government, catholic and independent schools and are aligned with industries predicted to experience economic and employment growth – helping kids secure the jobs they need in the future.
Tech Schools are part of the Labor Government’s plan to boost performance in STEM subjects, including a 25 per cent increase in the number of Year 9 students reaching the highest level of achievement in mathematics and 33 per cent more 15-year-olds reaching the highest levels in science.
